The Liberty of Irrelevance

Why you are paralyzed by opinions that don't exist (and how to stop caring).

In partnership with

You are not the main character.

I am going to tell you something that might hurt your feelings, but it will save your career.

Nobody is thinking about you.

Most people move through life terrified of "Them."

  • "What will they say if I launch a podcast?"

  • "What will they think if my business fails?"

  • "What if they laugh at my post?"

We imagine a stadium full of people watching our every move, waiting to boo us off the stage.

Psychologists call this The Spotlight Effect.

The Manilow Experiment

In a famous study at Cornell University, researchers forced students to wear an embarrassing bright yellow Barry Manilow t-shirt.

They sent these students into a crowded room.

Later, they asked the students: "How many people in that room noticed your shirt?"

The students guessed 50%.

The reality? Less than 10%.

We systematically overestimate how much attention people pay to us.

Here is the truth:

Everyone else is too busy worrying about their own "Spotlight" to notice yours.

They aren't thinking about your failure. They are thinking about their rent, their insecurity, and their lunch.

This is not an insult. It is a superpower.

If nobody cares, you are free.

  • You can launch the business. If it fails, nobody will remember in a week.

  • You can post the video. If it flops, the algorithm buries it and nobody sees it.

  • You can ask for the sale. If they say no, they move on instantly.

The "risk" of embarrassment is an illusion created by your ego.

So, how do we prove this to our brain? We have to inoculate ourselves against the fear.

To turn off the spotlight, you need to practice 'Controlled Embarrassment'.
